The DC Universe’s highly anticipated Green Lantern series, Lanterns, recently unveiled its first footage at a private HBO Upfront event, offering a rich glimpse into the show's unique tone, core plot, and character dynamics. Far from a typical space opera, the series—which is now slated for release in late Summer 2026—is positioning itself as a grounded, detective-driven epic that promises to be a foundational cornerstone of James Gunn’s new DCU.

The series, which is part of the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, has been consistently pitched as a "True Detective" with power rings. The main thrust of the eight-episode first season will focus on veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan and new recruit John Stewart investigating a cosmic-level murder in the American heartland.
Showrunner Chris Mundy (Ozark), co-writing alongside the prolific team of Damon Lindelof(Watchmen) and DC comic writer Tom King, is crafting an atmospheric series. The footage revealed a distinct Western aesthetic with "brownish tones," emphasizing a grounded, rural setting as the backdrop for an intergalactic mystery. This approach allows the creators to establish a deep, character-focused story on Earth, which will eventually tie into the larger, overarching mythology of the DCU.
Cast, Character Dynamics, and Cosmic Cameos
The show's casting solidifies its focus on intense, character-driven drama:

Hal Jordan is played by Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights), a seasoned, legendary Lantern who is nearing retirement and acting as a "substitute teacher" to his partner.

John Stewart is played by Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge), a highly capable, driven new recruit, former Marine, and architect.
The relationship between the two Lanterns is central, described as a "buddy cop show" where the core theme is "replacement—when should someone step aside and when is it time for the next person to take the reins?" Teaser descriptions hint at immediate friction, with Stewart arguing he is better equipped to save people than his veteran mentor.
Additional confirmed cast members include Kelly Macdonald as Kerry, a local sheriff who gets caught up in the mystery, and Ulrich Thomsen in an unconfirmed role rumored to be the villain Sinestro.
The series also directly links to the wider DCU through the confirmed supporting role of Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner, who is set to make his DCU debut in the Superman film. Furthermore, the teaser included a quick name-drop of the fan-favorite alien squirrel Lantern, Ch’p, confirming that the creative team is willing to embrace the franchise's more eccentric, colorful elements despite the initially serious tone.
